Whisky is a regulated spirit and is used worldwide. It is available in many variations and these are due to the raw materials, fermentation yeast, distilling process and ageing. The different types of whiskies are Bourbon whisky, malt whisky, corn whisky, wheat whisk, rye whisky and more.

The main ingredients used to produce whisky are grain, water and yeast. Whiskey can be produced by distilling fermented grain mash. The different types of grains that can be used to produce whisky are barley, rye, wheat, corn and buckwheat. The type of grain used to make whisky gives it particular characteristics. Grain can be used in various combinations.

The water is added to the malted grain/grain in the mashing process. The water used should be of drinking water standard. Water is also added to whisky during the bottling process to get the desired strength. Water is important for making whisky and the characteristics of water can impact the final product.

Yeast is used in the fermentation process in which sugar is decomposed into ethanol and carbon dioxide. The type of yeast used can impact the flavour of the final output. The different types of yeast that can be used are wild yeast and cultivated yeast.

When wild yeast is used it will settle down in the mash and begin to multiply. As will the other organisms therefore this type of method of fermentation is not used. Cultivated yeast is the preferred method used.

When cultivated yeast is mixed in the mash and heated it induces the fermentation process and decomposes the sugar.
